Target has begun a nationwide rollout of gift cards made from corn-based plastic in time for the holiday shopping season.

The bioplastic, sold under the name Mirel, biodegrades in a wide range of environments including soil and home compost, according to its manufacturer.

In July, Target test-marketed the gift cards in 129 of its stores.
