Here are five ways to aleviate e-waste:
1. Avail yourself of approved electronic waste recyclers in your area.
If you do not know where one exists . . . then consumers can use the
free recycler locator on the cover page of www.electronicrecyclers.com.
2. Resell and recycle your old and reusable electronics on reliable
websites such as www.ebay.com and www.liquidationconnect.com. There are
many other good and safe sites out there.
3. Use a recognized take back or mail back program - such as the ones
that have been announced and promoted by Waste Management, Sony, HP and
Dell.
4. Lobby your politicians to change the laws in your state. California
leads the way in electronic recycling. In 2005 CA recycled over 65mm
lbs of electronic waste, in 06 over 120mm lbs and in 07 it should be
almost 200mm lbs. Most other states have no landfill ban on electronic
waste . . . if we live in one world and therefore one environment. . .
isn't something terribly wrong when NY, Florida, Texas and most other
states are allowing dumping of electronic waste in their landfills and
into third world countries?
5. Lastly, DO NOT THROW anything electronic away. There is NO PLACE
CALLED AWAY. Everything inside your cell phone, laptop, flat screen or
electronic gadget can be recycled. We all have to learn to resell,
recycle and reuse our electronics.
