Pasadena, CA-based Trader Joe’s has applied with the design review board of Sacramento to build a 12,657-sq.-ft. specialty foods and beverage market.

Seattle-based Larry’s Market opened its sixth store in Redmond, WA. The 50,000-sq.-ft. store features an oven for custom-made pizzas, a butcher shop, a wine cellar and a full-service seafood counter.

Lawrence, KS-based Community Mercantile Co-op, a natural foods grocer known as “The Merc,” is planning to relocate to the former home of Alvin’s IGA. The board voted unanimously to pursue a lease.

A Nov. 1 opening is planned for a Whole Foods Market (WFMI) in Denver’s Cherry Creek district. Another store is slated for the city’s Highlands Ranch suburb in 2001. Additionally, a Whole Foods is expected to open in Albuquerque, NM, in 2001.

Wild Oats Markets (OATS) in mid-August opened a 30,000-sq.-ft. store on Cleveland’s east side. A second OATS store in Cleveland is planned to open by the end of the year.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Farmer Jack and Kroger (KR) stores are adding sushi, ethnic foods, exotic fruits, veggies and wine in certain Detroit neighborhoods. Kroger opened a store in Farmington Hills, MI, featuring a chef for premade meals; an organic foods section; and the chain’s first kosher, rabbi-supervised kitchen in the state.
