Stephen Ashkin joined Seventh Generation Inc. as director of new-product development and environmental affairs.

USDA named Susan Alpert the agency’s new food safety czar in the position of director of food safety in the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. She also will be the FDA’s liaison to the president’s Food Safety Initiative.

Marshall Post, formerly director of marketing for Twinlab, has taken the same position with Country Life of Hauppauge, NY.

Real Goods Trading Co. said John Deneen joined the company as director of e-commerce. Alex Archaro joined the company as e-commerce technology manager.

Michael Maves, M.D., assumed the position of president of the Consumer Healthcare Products Association. He succeeds James Cope, who retired after 38 years with the association.

Bernard Schwetz, senior advisor for science at FDA, was named acting deputy commissioner. The agency still is looking for a permanent successor for Michael Friedman, who vacated the spot earlier this year.

Delicious Brands Inc. appointed Thomas Guinan president and CEO and elected him to the board. Guinan replaces Michael Kirby.

John Goodman joined Rella Good Cheese Co. and HempNut Inc. as VP of sales and marketing.

U.S. Pharmacopoeia appointed Roger Williams, M.D., executive VP and CEO-designate of the U.S. Pharma-copoeial Convention, effective Jan. 4, 2000.

Rexall Showcase International, the direct sales division of Rexall Sundown Inc. (RXSD), hired Richard Cochran as VP of international operations.

Stephen Straus, M.D., was appointed director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health.

Herbert Shuster, food scientist and founder of Shuster Labs and a founder of the Private Label Manufacturing Association, died in September at the age of 75.
