British supermarket group J. Sainsbury Plc. will acquire for about $490 million, the 53-store, northeast-U.S.-food-retail chain Star Markets, which also operates four Wild Harvest natural foods stores and a wholesale food business. Star Markets had revenues of about $1 billion in 1997. Sainsbury also owns Shaws Supermarkets, a 126-store New England-based chain with 1997 revenues of about $3 billion. The deal is expected to close early in 1999.
