The Environmental Defense's (ED) Alliance for Environmental Innovation has released a report on sustainable seafood options for businesses that shows that while some seafood products have major environmental problems, there is a wide variety of high-quality, competitively priced and environmentally responsible products available. "Seventy percent of world fish stocks are fully exploited or over-fished, and catches are declining," states Bruce Hammond, project manager at Environmental Defense, in a Dec. 11 announcement. "Our research shows that, while some species are over-fished, businesses and consumers can make more sustainable seafood selections that are similar in taste and texture, often lower in cost, and provide greater supply stability."

ED hopes that its Business Guide To Sustainable Seafood will convince businesses of the benefits of sustainable seafood purchases, such as good public relations, lower costs, better quality and more predictable supply.
