Domtar says its forests and mills will meet Forest Stewardship Council standards if pilot projects go well.

Montreal, Quebec-based papermaker Domtar has signed an agreement with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Canada to certify all of its forests and mills to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards if two pilot projects succeed.

"By adhering to a standard that respects the values of all forest users, including the [Assembly of] First Nations, we believe that the public, governments, customers and investors will also see it as a serious commitment to ensure the sustainability of our operations," states Raymond Royer, Domtar president and CEO, in a Nov. 19 article at GreenBiz.com.

“Domtar's commitment … has the potential to more than double the amount of hectares certified under the FSC system in North America and provides a tremendous boost to WWF's efforts to ensure the long-term future of the Canadian boreal forest," states Monte Hummel, WWF president, in the GreenBiz.com article.

Domtar will be the only paper and forest products company in North America to apply FSC certification to its forests and its manufacturing and distribution activities. Currently, Domtar offers two FSC-certified paper products.
