Worldwide greenhouse gas trading reaches 71 million tons.

Trading in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions more than doubled in 2003 worldwide. Governments and multilateral agencies bought more than half of the 71 million tons traded this year, according to a recently released World Bank study as reported in a Dec. 5 Reuters article.

But that's just a drop in the bucket. In 1996, the world generated 6.6 billion tons of energy-related carbon emissions, according to the Reuters article.

Hydropower, biomass and wind energy projects contributed to half of the 2003 emission credits. Carbon dioxide emissions trading totaled 29 million tons in 2002.
