Emily Levine
Emily Levine gives new meaning to the term "paradigm shift." Using
her considerable gifts at humor and her Harvard education, Levine tackles
the world of shifting business practices and technologies. A stand-up
and stand-out addition to any trade association or corporate program – Levine
takes all of the ideas and presentations given at meeting workshops
and keynotes and wraps them into a completely customized and extremely
funny presentation. Levine debuted this presentation at the 2001 TED
Conference at the invitation of Norman Lear and was a HUGE HIT.
Emily Levine was born in Nashville, raised in Connecticut and Brooklyn,
and educated at Harvard. Upon receipt of her honors degree, she went
to Rome where she dubbed spaghetti westerns and learned to gesticulate.
Returning to Brooklyn, she taught autistic children until she joined
a comedy group who ultimately drove her crazy. It was at this point she
became a comedian, performing on television and headlining in comedy
clubs. The Los Angeles Times called Emily "a stand-out as a stand-up" and "the
mad professor genius comic." Newsweek Magazine called her one of
the new "queens of comedy."
In LA, Emily became a television writer. She worked on existing series
(Designing Women, Love and War, Dangerous Minds) and created pilots for
new series under her deals with Universal Studios and the Walt Disney
Company. During her stint at the latter, she was asked to speak at a
think tank co-convened by Betty Friedan and the Institute for the Study
of Women and Men at USC. The challenge of bringing her wit, charm and
intellect to a serious subject was exhilarating. A subsequent invitation
to entertain at a physicists’ think tank in La Jolla resulted in
Emily’s one-woman show, "eLevine.universe."
Using illustrations from Newton’s Principia to the National
Enquirer, "eLevine.universe" argues
that the shift from classical physics to chaos and complexity theory
presages a shift in our ethic and aesthetic, a shift, for example, from
either/or logic to the logic of and-and. Indeed, Emily personifies this
and-and thinking, synthesizing comedy and philosophy, high culture and
low culture, the sublime and the ridiculous into a form that has been
described as "thought-provoking and hilarious", "zany
and brainy", and (her personal favorite) "Sartre meets The
Simpsons."
Emily has performed "eLevine.universe" at the Tiffany Theater
in Los Angeles and at the American Place Theater and the 92nd St. Y in
New York. She is also, thanks to two smash appearances at the TED (Technology/Entertainment/Design)
Conference, newly launched as a corporate speaker. This fresh direction
exploits Emily’s ability to play the role of change agent, to find
the interface between her material and the specific challenges facing
corporations and other institutions in the process of re-visioning themselves.
Already anticipating her success in this last, best career, Emily has
started work on a new show, entitled "How I Learned to Stop Worrying
and Love the Free Market."

as a top sponsored amateur throughout the 1980’s, and worked
with the National Skateboard Association building and designing vert
ramps
and street courses.
Turning pro in 1987 and designing his own signature boards for the
famous Alva Team led by world champion and skateboard pioneer, Tony
Alva. The
experience Dave gained through managing and working with the Alva team
led him doing hundreds of demos and competitions worldwide. Gaining
knowledge of the skateboarding business led Dave creating a business
of his own
in 1993, Focus Skateboards. This time partnering with skateboarding
legends Christian Hosoi, Eddie Reategui and Chicken. This business
included manufacturing
and distribution of skateboard decks, wheels, snowboards and clothing.
Dave has continued to be involved with all the major skateboard

Charles "Chuck" F. Marcy, President,
Horizon Organic
Chuck Marcy, President of Horizon Organic, has made his own organic
transition. The active lifestyle and love of skiing, which brought
him to Horizon Organic and the mountains of Colorado, have led him
to new heights in the food industry.
More than 20 years ago, fresh from the halls of Harvard, Marcy took
what he learned about marketing and general management at business
school
and started his career at General Foods as an assistant product manager
on Tang. Today, he’s running the nation’s leading organic
food brand.
It is little surprise that the distance between Tang and Horizon Organic
was not a straight line. In between, Marcy has served as a high-level
executive and strategist at several Fortune 500 corporations and dairy-related
businesses. Before joining Horizon Organic, he was president and chief
executive officer of the Sealright Corp. of Kansas City, Mo., a manufacturer
of dairy packaging and packaging systems. Previously, he was president
of the Golden Grain Co., a subsidiary of Quaker Oats Co., maker of both
the Near East brand of all-natural products and the well-known Rice-a-Roni
brand. In addition, he served as president of the dairy division at Kraft
General Foods. He also held senior marketing and strategic planning positions
with Sara Lee Corp. and General Foods Corp.
Since joining Horizon Organic as president and chief operating officer
in November 1999 and assuming the role of chief executive officer in
January 2000, Marcy has led the company through a number of milestones
including the recent merger with Dean Foods in January 2004. And:
- Led the company to $200 million in sales
- Gained significant new distribution in U.S. supermarkets
- Grew
ACV for Horizon Organic milk products from 33% in 2000 to 65% in
2003
- Won
the coveted Colorado Ethics in Business Award
- Has been appointed to the Organic Trade Association Board
(OTA)
- Introduced numerous groundbreaking products including the first
national brand of organic pudding and organic fruit gels,
single-serve flavored
organic milk as well as the first ever certified organic infant
formula
An avid sports fan, Marcy has always loved the thrill of victory.
As a young boy, he was sure he would grow up to be a pitcher for the
Cleveland
Indians. Today, he still faces down the competition and leads a different
kind of winning team.

Michael
Baruch; CEO, Fred Segal Beauty
A
seasoned professional, distinguished businessman and accomplished
visionary, Michael A. Baruch is a true entrepreneur. His natural
instincts and aptitude for business have fueled his professional
success. Intelligent and creative, adventurous and resourceful, Baruch
characterizes the modern businessman. As Co-Founder, Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer of Barmas Inc., the parent company of Fred
Segal Beauty, Baruch performs his duties with skill, integrity and
wisdom, meeting challenges with stride and the future with optimism.
At an early age, Baruch demonstrated a natural inclination towards
business. By the age of sixteen, while studying political science
and business administration at UCLA, Baruch founded his first company,
BPS, a parking management firm. What began in 1983 as a service
employing just three attendants grew into a profitable business with
over 150
employees and 40 locations by 1986. Today, BPS serves as the leading
parking management firm in Los Angeles.
For Baruch, BPS was just the beginning. In 1990, after graduating
from UCLA and receiving his law degree from Northeastern University,
Baruch sold his burgeoning business to the largest parking organization
in the country. Shortly thereafter, Baruch switched gears. For his
next venture, he pioneered an entirely new media concept referred
to today as place-based media. Within a year, he brought his unique
concept to life, and in 1991, Baruch launched Stopwatch Entertainment
Network, a media company providing in-store entertainment programming
and media placements in retail stores nationwide, such as Walmart,
Sears, Circuit City, Footlocker and Blockbuster. In 1997, Stopwatch
was acquired by one of the largest media conglomerates in the country,
further illustrating Baruch’s unique ability to conceptualize,
develop and manage a successful business operation.
In 1992, after founding Stopwatch Entertainment Network, Baruch
surprised everyone with an uncharacteristic move. Always in search
of a challenge,
Baruch saw opportunities in the beauty business and determined the
industry as the arena for his next enterprise. Baruch explains, "Firstly,
I was intrigued by the beauty and fashion industry. Secondly, I was
given the opportunity to work with a friend and creative genius,
Paul DéArmas. Thirdly, I was afforded the chance to align
myself with Fred Segal whose vision and success have always inspired
me." DéArmas and Baruch assembled, and with the help
of Fred Segal himself, developed the concept for Fred Segal Beauty.
In April of 1992, the company was born.
As CEO of Fred Segal Beauty, Baruch’s role is challenging and
diverse. Responsible for creating the overall vision and determining
the trajectory of the company, Baruch works closely with his divisional
directors developing strategies, budgets and operational guidelines.
Baruch also manages all aspects of marketing, specifically brand
building and brand awareness. Importantly, he initiates and develops
partnership opportunities with appropriate companies/brands, establishes
new markets, domestic and abroad, and acts as ambassador for Fred
Segal Beauty by developing and maintaining relationships with clients
and partners.
