A lifelong outdoor enthusiast, Jon is at home exploring America’s most remote wild places, but he’s also known as a magazine innovator. Over the last five years, he has led Backpacker to a series of editorial honors, including a 2008 National Magazine Award for General Excellence, the publishing industry’s most prestigious honor. In 2007, Backpacker became the first magazine to conduct a comprehensive carbon footprint analysis, and it pioneered the use of GPS technology in print and online to provide hikers with more reliable travel information. Behind Jon’s leadership, BACKPACKER was a founding member of the outdoor industry’s Eco-Working Group, and the magazine remains the only voting member from the media.
