How to Live Well without Owning a Car by Chris Balish gives readers an opportunity to brainstorm how to live simply without the hassle of owning a car. Numerous points are presented to assist you with figuring out what the true cost of car ownership is.

For some people, living without a car might be impossible. However, it is astonishing to learn how much money and time you can save by being independent from cars. The costs associated with a car come not only from the purchase price and insurance but also from gas (with fast-rising gas prices),  parking, taxes, various maintenance fees, parking and speeding tickets (if you are not careful!), etc…

The author lists about 45 things you don't miss about owning a car. This list includes; sitting in rush-hour traffic, wasting time looking for a parking spot, flat tires, dead batteries, road rage, having your car towed and impounded, rust and deterioration, and high-pressure car sales people.

The health benefits of a society with a low dependence on cars are significant. The rise of the obesity rate and the rise of the number of cars are comparable. People used to get more exercise by walking, riding horses, and biking. (As you can see in your town, many bikers are in great shape!) The air quality is better when gasoline is used less. Noise is less. The environmental concern over global warming could be eased if many of us could let go of our dependency to cars.

For those who can’t completely eliminate the use of a car, reducing the use of a car also significantly helps. In many cases, people can find ways to get around by other means. The book provides advice on how to find alternative forms of transportation. With notorious traffic jams in most major cities in the US, it is about time to consider different means of transportation. Doing so is good for your health and the environment!
