The Mindful Leader: Ten Principles for Bringing Out the Best in Ourselves and Others by Michael Carroll explores the ways we can create an inspirational and stress-free workplace by bringing more awareness to each moment.
The book is divided into four parts: Inspiring the Best in Ourselves and Others, The Ten Talents of a Mindful Leader, Bringing Our Full Being to Work, Practices and Exercises. The book suggests ways in which you can attain good leadership skills. Chapter 2 explores ten talents that leaders should hold: Simplicity, Poise, Respect, Courage, Confidence, Enthusiasm, Patience, Awareness, Skillfulness, and Humility. Chapter 4 discusses how you can attain these talents through various practices. You might think… “Simplicity, poise, and humility? That is not possible for me!!” You might have never heard these words in a typical leadership skills book or class. Carroll’s suggestions are harmonious and balanced yet also seem to be very practical and effective ways to manage your work and co-workers.
Most of us with some sort of work experiences have had bosses who are challenging to work with. They stress you out by intimidating you, by looking for only bad qualities in you---and worst of all, by being stressed out themselves. You may have promised yourself, “I will never be someone like that.” Then, you become a supervisor later in life and find yourself becoming stressed out just like the boss you didn’t like. You realize how difficult it is to own responsibilities and manage others and situations while being harmonious with co-workers and yourself. --- Does this situation sound familiar? Then, this book is for you. Are you not in a leadership position yet? We would say this book is still for you. The Mindful Leader will assist you in seeing any relationships and situations from an objective point of view. It gives you a chance to step back and examine how you relate to others and situations: Is it respectful? Is it productive? Is it positive?
For over two decades, the author Michael Carroll was in a fast paced environment in the publishing industry and Wall Street. At the same time, he practiced awareness in the workplace. Carroll graduated from a Buddhist seminary in 1987 and is an authorized teacher in the language of Tibetan Buddhist master Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Chogyam Trungpa is the founder of the Shambhala Center and Naropa University, the first Buddhist inspired university in the U.S. Michael has served to teach awareness in the workplace for P&G, Disney Publishing, Starbucks, and other major companies.
