Seven states—AZ, CA, TX, IL, MN, PA and WI—filed lawsuits on Oct. 15 seeking to stop sales of Herbal Ecstacy, made by Global World Media Corp. of Venice Beach, CA. The lawsuits allege that the product, which contains ephedra, is illegal because it has not been approved as a drug by FDA. FDA currently classifies the product as a supplement. Also, the Federal Trade Commission reached a settlement that requires Global to print health warnings about possible side effects in advertising and on the product’s label. Global President Sean Shayan said his product is not a drug and that no injuries or deaths have been linked to it.
