Environmentally responsible mutual fund best balanced fund for one- and five-year returns.

Mutual-fund-information company Lipper Analytical Services Inc. has named Green Century Balanced Fund the number one balanced fund for the one- and five-year periods ending on September 30, 2003. The Green Century fund is a no-load, environmentally responsible mutual fund that invests in companies with clean environmental records and those that strive to solve “critical environmental problems,” according to recent release.

The balanced fund posted an average annual return of 13.3 percent for the five-year period and a return of 60.1 percent for the one-year period.

“The Fund's strategy of investing in growing clean and green companies has served it well this year,” states Amy Perry, president of Boston-based Green Century Capital Management (GCCM), in the announcement.

State Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) founded and own GCCM. In 2003, GCCM worked against drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It was also part of the effort to get Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq: DELL) to expand its computer-recycling program.
