Living Foods BarExtend the Life of Notebook and the Battery - Consider Using an Ergonomic, Silent, Green Desktop Computer Along with a Notebook. The recent battery problems, facing a number of notebook manufacturers are not really a surprise as the technology is not fully under control just yet. An online resource for battery information recommends to charge the battery to 40 percent capacity and store it in a cool place, when using a laptop plugged into an electrical outlet (see www.batteryuniversity.com, Part 2, BU34).

Is it time to rethink how we use desktop and notebook computers? One PC maker believes it is - for healthier, safer, more productive and greener computing.

"Notebooks are great for people who need mobile computing, but too many people use them all the time, even when sitting at their desks. The higher heat shortens the lifetime of electronics and battery," said Thomas Schramm, president of GreenMachineShop.com, of Ann Arbor, Mich. "The higher noise level and the unergonomic setup can reduce productivity and cause health issues. Using a desktop computer whenever possible and a laptop only when necessary is the best solution."

That's what Michael Kim of InspiredTraffic.com does. He worked mostly with his notebook, even when in his office. Several months ago he added one of our silent, ergonomic, and very low radiation desktops. The desktop handles now most of the workload, the laptop is used when he hits the road. Kim reported that his productivity increased between 10 and 20 percent and that he feels much fresher and has more energy at the end of a work day. The silent desktop raised his awareness for other noise sources and started turning unused devices off. Kim said that he lowered his electrical bill by 30% lower. "It's amazing, my computer practically paid for itself in less than 3 months" , he said.

GreenMachineShop.com has identified a number of ways a green, silent desktop computer can be a better alternative, including:

  • Increasing productivity by up to 20% and lowering stress and fatigue levels by eliminating noise and electromagnetic radiation in combination with an ergonomic solution for keyboard, mouse and monitor

  • Reducing muscle and joint strain in the hands, wrists, arms, neck, shoulders and back

  • Reducing eye strain by using a TCO'03 compliant monitor (highest ergonomic and environmental standard) and a light colored keyboards to reduce frequent contrast adjustments for the eyes.

  • Significantly decreasing the environmental impact of the computer. Beyond existing regulations.
