This fall, Timberland unveiled new packaging for its footwear products aimed at reducing the company’s environmental footprint. The new packaging, made of environmentally-friendlier materials, 100 percent post-consumer waste fiber, soy based inks and water-based solvents in place of chemical glues, features the “Our Footprint” ingredient label. This industry-leading transparency initiative provides consumers with information about the making of the boots or shoes. The “Our Footprint” label has three sections:
• “Environmental Impact” reports the average number of kilowatt-hours (kWh) that are used to produce a pair of Timberland® shoes and the percentage of renewable energy Timberland uses from sources such as the sun, wind and water.
• “Community Impact” details the percentage of factories assessed by Timberland against its Code of Conduct, the percentage of child laborers in factories’ workforce and the total number of hours Timberland employees volunteered in the previous year.
• “Manufactured” tells the consumer in what factory and what country the product was made.
The next generation of Timberland’s packaging will debut in spring 2007. Select styles of Timberland Outdoor Performance products will feature the Green Index. Like the Energy Star ratings on appliances, the Green Index will provide consumers with a measure of the environmental impact of Timberland's footwear products.
Timberland, a company with a strong dedication to corporate social responsibility, believes it must do its best to be fully transparent with its customers and the industry, as well as minimize its environmental footprint Timberland hopes to inspire consumers to think about the impact they can have as individuals – all of which reflect the brand’s values and objectives to “make it better.” This new packaging and labeling helps accomplish these goals.
